I’ve been asked quite a bit this week why I’m still using my old RAZR and not toting the new iPhone. There a few basic reasons why it wouldn’t make alot of sense, namely that I tend to drop my phone at least once a week. Feature-wise though, the iPhone doesn’t satisfy the basic requirements of what I need in my next mobile phone. For data, I would need “3G” or HSDPA or whatever the AT&T highspeed network is called. WiFi isn’t as important to me, since it is just a phone and not a “laptop replacement” (i just invented that term).
The second main feature in my next phone, assuming 3G is there, is SlingPlayer. Access to my Slingbox from a portable device would be huge, especially with the multimedia capabilities of the iPhone. Third, I would need 16GB of flash storage space. I really think v2 of the iPhone could include 3G and be released at 16GB & 8GB sizes, probably at the same price-point. I gotta think the folks at Sling are working on a solution because 500k+ people just became iPhone users – the problem is that the network sucks, so imagine trying to watch a sling-feed on a dialup connection…
